Movie series "Property in view"

On December 8, the movie Chinatown (USA 1974) will be shown.

About our series

Once a month during the semester, our series brings the debate on property issues to the big screen. We show a filmic treatment of conflicts over property, current dynamics of change and possible alternatives. A member of our Collaborative Research Center will give a brief introduction to the film at the beginning of the evening and shed light on the connections between the film and our property research. The film will be followed by a discussion with anyone from the audience who is interested. The films are usually shown in the original language with subtitles.

About the movie

When private investigator Jake Gittes is hired to tail a supposedly unfaithful husband, he has no idea that he will soon find himself caught up in a conspiracy involving Los Angeles’s water supply. First, the husband turns out to be the chief engineer of the waterworks, and the client turns out to be a fraud; as a result, Gittes delves deeper and deeper into a corrupt system of land speculation and privatization. A classic of American crime cinema.

Introduction by Jürgen Martschukat, historian at the University of Erfurt specializing in North American history.
